Paris-Sorbonne is a French university which specialises in literature and is located in Paris 5th arrondissement in the heart of the Latin Quarter (Quartier Latin), near the Luxembourg Gardens and Pantheon on the Left Bank. The Sorbonne, one of the oldest universities in Europe was founded in Paris by Robert de Sorbon in 1257 and faces the Luxembourg Garden (Jardin du Luxembourg). Due to the university, Paris became a major scientific and cultural center in Europe with more than 20,000 students. Robert de Sorbon, the chaplain of Saint Louis was born in Sorbon in 1201 and died in Paris in 1274. At Sorbonne he was the first headmaster that allowed poor children to have access to education.
