The Arenes de Lutece is a Gallo-Roman amphitheater located in Paris 5th arrondissement near the Notre Dame built at the end of the 1st century AD. They remained in operation until the end of the 3rd century, the date of the first destruction of Lutetia. The stones were then used to build the foundations of the city walls where the population had taken refuge. One of the biggest amphitheatres, Place of exhibitions and battles between men and animals, the arenas of Lutetia also served for representations relating to the dramatic art. At the request of Victor Hugo the mayor of Paris did not destroy this sumptuous Gallo-Roman amphitheater, today the oldest monument of the capital!
